Tramonto a New York sofa by Cassina
Cassina reissues an icon of 20th-century design, a symbol of the vitality, innovation and creativity of Italian design and one of its masters, Gaetano Pesce. The Tramonto sofa in New York is reproduced in an exclusive limited series of 50 pieces while maintaining all the expressive value and relevance of the original 1980 design. A tribute to the designer’s adopted city and, at the same time, a warning (later questioned by Pesce) about its imminent decline. But that’s not all. Sunset in New York is a piece of furniture intended to redeem the mere functionalism of design by expressing-with a clear Pop Art inspiration-a lucid reflection on contemporaneity and the identity of a metropolis synonymous with dynamism, revolution, and energy. A personal confession, then, embodied in a form that transcends the usual logic of seating and becomes architecture. Individually crafted upholstered skyscrapers are covered in an exclusive fabric characterized by an embossed rectangular pattern that juxtaposes light with dark, recreating the light reflecting off the windows. In contrast, the sun, wrapped in a bright red satin, disappears in the center between the buildings of the backrest. Scaled down to a larger version than the archival model, Sunset in New York is available in a single three-seater size. To ensure the authenticity of this special edition, each sofa has a satin-finished steel plaque bearing the Cassina logo, the series number, and the name and signature of artist Gaetano Pesce. Like all new Cassina products, Tramonto a New York uses circular materials developed through the work of Cassina LAB.
