Varier is absolutely a new concept of sitting.
Our bodies are made to move. It was this basic concept that prompted Norwegian industrial designer Peter Opsvik to question the notion that there was only one correct sitting posture. According to Opsvik, our body intuitively seeks the ideal sitting position, with the consequence that the best position is always the next one – and it is this freedom of movement that defines all of its designs.
In 1979, Opsvik designed the Variable ™ balans®, the first chair to successfully challenge conventional sitting habits. Designed to inspire movement, Variable ™ balans® set new standards in terms of seating design and functionality. Now an icon, it is one of our most famous chairs.
To many of us, our lifestyle requires that we sit for long periods of time. At work, at home, during meetings, while we travel, or in the classroom. When we are seated, we tend to remain motionless. We become restless, tense, and it is difficult for us to concentrate. But the solution is simple – the freedom to move.
