Virgil Abloh, the American fashion designer and entrepreneur began in 2020-the year before his untimely death in November 2021-to explore with Cassina the implications of modularity, a pivotal theme in contemporary design. Based on the idea of an active and playful participation in the configuration of space by those who use the furniture, in consonance with their needs and habits, Abloh landed on the Modular Imagination project: a basic unit, geometric and absolute, available in two dimensions, to be used to build worlds each time new and suitable for both private and public environments. The rigid appearance, in matte black, deceives an unexpected softness, making Modular Imagination not only a seat but also a tabletop. By overlapping two pieces through a specific connecting element that allows its orange feet to fit into the top of the block below, a pouf, bench or table can be obtained, making multiple uses possible. Sharing the core values that gave birth to design icons such as Le Corbusier’s Tabourets-respect for function, expressiveness and essentiality of form, and excellence of craftsmanship-Modular Imagination is inspired by exquisitely contemporary principles: versatility, which makes it suitable for inhabiting homes of different styles and sizes. In fact, thanks to the work done by Cassina LAB, its components can be easily separated at the end of the product’s life cycle. A dotted line, positioned under the feet, indicates the point at which the soft polyurethane upholstery, with a percentage of polyols derived from biological sources, can be cut, separating it from the recycled wood frame to facilitate the proper recovery and recycling of the elements at the end of its life cycle. Fully in keeping with Virgil Abloh’s work, Modular Imagination enters the Cassina catalog representing yet another contribution of quality to the world of design by the creative. The round logo in bas-relief on the faces and the hashtag #AblohCassina seal the union between the company and the great artist, who has embodied – through influence, innovation and insight – the characteristics of a modern-day master within the international intellectual scene.
